# Sending attachments

How attachments work with SendWP, how many files and how large, which file types, and what to do with bigger files.

Invoices, tickets, certificates, calendar invites: plenty of WordPress emails carry a file. SendWP sends attachments just as your plugins add them, with no extra setup. There are a few limits to know about.

## The limits

| | Limit |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Files per email | Up to **5** |
| Size | Under **5 MB** for all the files in one email together |
| File types | PDF, Word (`.doc`, `.docx`), Excel (`.xls`, `.xlsx`), CSV, plain text, images (`.jpg`, `.jpeg`, `.png`, `.gif`), ZIP, calendar invites (`.ics`) and HTML (`.html`, `.htm`) |

We check each file's real type as well as its name, so renaming a file to `.pdf` won't get it through.

## What happens when an email is over the limits

An email with too many files, files that are too large or a type we don't send is turned down before it's sent, so it won't go out and won't appear in your email log. If an email with attachments seems to have gone missing, check its files against the limits above and send it again without the extras, or with a link instead.

## Sending bigger files

Email is a poor way to move large files, whoever sends it: many mail providers cap what they'll accept, and big emails are slower and more likely to be filtered. For anything large, upload the file to your site's media library or a file-sharing service and put a link in the email instead. Most form, store and membership plugins let you add a link to their email templates.

## Attachments in your email log

Emails with attachments show a paperclip in your **Email Logs**, and you can open an email to see its files. We keep attachment files for about a week; after that, the log still lists them but marks them as deleted.

## Something not adding up?

If an attachment you expected is missing, or a file within the limits is being turned down, email [support@sendwp.com](mailto:support@sendwp.com) with the email's subject and when it was sent, and we'll take a look.
